Why a personal statement should sound specific, not impressive
Notes from POWDER mentors on finding details that make an essay memorable and honest.

A personal statement does not become strong because it sounds impressive. It becomes strong when it gives the reader a specific person, a specific moment, and a specific way of thinking.
Students often try to summarize their whole life in one essay. A better approach is to choose a narrow story that reveals values through action, detail, and reflection.
The best essays feel honest and controlled. They do not shout for attention; they let the reader understand why this student sees the world in a particular way.
